That there's a lush mountain rainforest just 30 minutes from a city as large, modern and convenient as San Juan is astonishing. In fact, it's the only tropical rainforest in the US National Parks System, and as such it is fiercely protected and shockingly pristine. Criss-crossed with gushing waterfalls, El Yunque is also home to 23 species of plant and animal found nowhere else on earth. Luckily there are a myriad of wonderful hiking trails, many of which lead to secret swimming holes. You can't leave without seeing it.
