Alper Petecki

Navigator Alper Petecki helps guests discover a feast of Turkish delights in the mesmerizing city of Izmir.

Navigator Biography

Alper Petekci believes the art of discovery lies in being observant and always seeking out the road less traveled. It’s an approach that has seen him thrive in the Turkish city of Izmir, where he is Lead Navigator at the Renaissance Izmir Hotel. “I love to walk around the city and generally I don't use the same streets,” he explains. “Also, I don't keep my face down; I love to look around me. This helps me to discover new openings.” Alper only moved to Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey, a few years ago but he has settled quickly, remarking that local people are often shocked by the extent of his knowledge. To build his awareness he explores the narrow backstreets of his neighborhood for hidden gems and enjoys “surprising guests with really interesting places.” An avid epicurean, Alper has fallen in love with the city’s thriving food culture. “I love the taste of the local sandwich —"Kumru,” he enthuses. “It is made with a special bread which is made from chickpea yeast and has fresh tomato and the local cheese — tulum — in it.” In his spare time he likes to fish for his supper on the Kordon — Izmir’s famous promenade. One of Izmir’s charms is that it has a mixed cultural heritage and Alper’s favorite haunts reflect this (and, of course, his love for food). He begins each day with a breakfast of Kumru and fruit juice from the local buffets; for lunch he will usually dine at his favorite French eatery, and after work he often goes to a bar for beers and Japanese food. No wonder he feels able to “smile every second.”
