However this meat patty dates back to the army of Genghis Khan who would place meat patties under their saddles. As they traveled the friction between the horse and the saddle would tenderize the meat and was then consumed raw. Using this method, when this army and meat padded saddles reached Russia, the beef transformed into steak tartare- a raw beef delicacy. Through trade routes this dish traveled to Germany where it became the beloved sandwich we know today.</p>
